In the UK, we support Art Against Knives, Dollis Dolls Nail Bar project.
Dollis Dolls is one of the projects delivered as part of Art Against Knives ‘In Our Hands’, a community based programme of projects and work shops designed to prevent young females from becoming victims and perpetrators of violent crime. They utilise current trends and work with local residents to design activities and safe spaces to encourage interaction between young girls and women.
This project also targets pathways to crime such as substance use, violence, and premature sexual activity, by encouraging the development of positive personal characteristics.
This weekly project is run by the young women and ladies from Dollis Valley Estate in North London (which has one of the highest concentrations of unemployment in the UK) The weekly sessions have been attended by over 80 females, who are learning professional nail care, designing their own nail art and running pop up nail bar events for other women in their local community.
In the US, we support Polished Girlz, started by a 13 year old dynamo!
The “Polished Girlz” nail team was started by 13-year-old Alanna Wall. She wanted to combine her love of drawing and nail design for different projects and she knew that she was too young to volunteer.
Nevertheless, Alanna’s compassionate spirit made her want to share her talents with young ladies that were hospitalized or not feeling quite as “polished”, so she decided to start her own organization. Add a mission of hand washing, infection reduction, and a few like-minded friends, and the “Polished Girlz” was born.
Fast forward through year one, and what started as a single girl with a dream and her mom, has grown into thousands of children served and hundreds of registered volunteers and counting!
Polished Girlz are excited to continue with Alanna’s vision as it spreads throughout the United States, Australia and Canada and are quite excited that the Polished Girlz will be a featured organization in China for the United Nations presentation on Americas Service organizations.
The Shine Nail Bar runs in Beeston, South Leeds in the UK. This social enterprise venture engages with girls in the local area to provide opportunities for work experience and employment.
Shine Nail Bar is a project of a larger programme. The Shine Project was established in August 2013 after St Luke’s CARES were granted funding from the Big Lottery Fund to start a project for young girls and women in the Inner South of Leeds. St Luke’s applied for this funding as they recognised that some young people need more support than can be offered in a youth group setting and through seeing first hand the effects of Domestic Violence, substance misusing parents, personal substance misuse, Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE) and family breakdown can have on the young people in the community. In order to help young people overcome these obstacles the staff at St Luke’s started providing intensive support to certain young people, in particualr those who were experiencing CSE or at risk of it. Through providing this support it became apparent that there was a gap in services in the south of the city for one to one mentoring for girls and young women who are experiencing hardship.
